About Cultivator Springs
A cultivator spring lets the tine kick back when it strikes a stone and then return to position — so it is both a safety element and the part that holds working depth. That double duty places this group among the hardest working items in the catalogue.
Because the load is high and impact-driven, section size is decisive here; our catalogue covers two sections, 10×26 and 12×22. In stony fields, spring fatigue shows itself as tines beginning to work at different depths from one another.
Tempering matters especially in heavy duty coiling: a thick-wire spring coiled without stress relief takes a permanent set on the first heavy impact.

How is a cultivator spring fitted?
The spring is seated onto the tine mounting bracket under compression; on heavy duty sections it is rarely possible to press it home by hand. Two approaches are used in practice: compressing the spring lengthways with a spring fitting tool (a vice-type compressor) and slipping the pin through, or removing the tine, fitting the spring free of load and refitting the tine. Never run the machine before the mounting pin and its retainer are seated — a loaded spring releasing suddenly can cause serious injury. Tine mountings differ between machines, so follow the sequence in your own machine manual.
How is a cultivator spring removed?
The reverse of fitting: take out the retainer and mounting pin first, then release the spring. If the spring carries preload, compress it with the tool and let the load off under control — forcing the pin directly can make the spring fly out. Remember that the pieces of a broken spring may still be under load.
Do I need a spring fitting tool for duckfoot springs?
On heavy duty sections (10×26, 12×22 and similar) it is needed in practice; on lighter sections the tine can simply be removed instead. The tool compresses the spring lengthways and lines the pin holes up, which makes the job both quicker and safer.
What do 10×26 and 12×22 mean?
They give the section size of the spring. On cultivator springs this is chosen to suit the tine mounting and the load it must carry.
