About Mower Springs
On a mower the drum suspension spring carries part of the weight of the cutting group, reducing the load the drum puts on the ground. A correctly set suspension spring both holds cutting height and reduces drum-to-ground friction, extending blade life.
These springs are of the long-bodied extension type and carry a loop hook at each end. The long body delivers the same force along a gentler curve, which helps the machine follow ground contours.
Fatigue in the suspension spring shows up as cutting height dropping and the drum beginning to touch the soil. At that point blade wear accelerates as well.

What does a drum suspension spring do?

That indicates the suspension spring has fatigued. Compare its free length with the original; if it has shortened, it needs replacing.
Why does the end type matter?
Loop hooks at both ends are standard in this group; a different end type changes the installed length and upsets the suspension setting.
Would fitting a stiffer suspension spring help?
An over-stiff spring lifts the drum too far and upsets cutting height. Staying close to the original force gives the right result.
